Volunteers

External funding from the Nationwide Foundation provided the organisation with the opportunity to train and prepare the staff for introducing volunteers to DWA. Four volunteers were recruited and trained but one quickly moved on to full-time employment. To work within the field of domestic abuse volunteers were equipped by the provision of intensive training. A temporary Volunteer Co-ordinator was appointed and during this appointment 8 volunteers were successfully recruited and trained. The training included areas such as; understanding domestic abuse and its effects, child protection and support skills.

Feedback is that the training was intense, worthwhile and enjoyable. Volunteers' work has included research, answering the crisis line and the business line, administration work, assisting with the 'Girls on the Move' project and the Rural HomePoint project. Some volunteers have taken up employment or further education since their training and voluntary work. This is an indicator of the volunteering experience assisting with confidence building and skills development. Unfortunately funding is no longer available for the post of Volunteer Co-ordinator. Regular meetings for volunteers are held to provide a forum to share information, bring fresh ideas and to share experiences of tasks and responsibilites. It also gives them the opportunity for informal discussion. DWA would like to formally thank all volunteers for their commitment, time, energy and efforts.

Training

The Domestic Abuse Service Development Fund post continued to provide training to agencies.

Training in understanding domestic abuse and the effects on Young People and Children was provided to 17 Groups - a wide spectrum of local authority service providers such as Social Work and Housing, voluntary groups like Aberlour and Family Mediation, community groups such as a YWCA Girl's Group. The year has seen the development of links through colleges and community groups to develop activities aimed at producing training resources by involving women, children and young people who have direct experience of domestic abuse.
